'Accounts' is a record of an extended conversation that took place among the members and invited guests of the AE Foundation in the first five years of its activity. It includes lectures, discussions and interviews with prominent figures, emerging architects and educators. Beginning with Doubt, Authorship, Architecture, City, Buildings, History and Resistance, the conversation continued to explore the many and varied schools of thought that occupy the discipline. This book is the result of the spontaneous enthusiasm that erupts when sincere individuals meet to discuss their favourite subject seriously.

Project of the Year Win!
Reiach and Hall Architects were delighted to receive the Project of the Year Award at the British Construction Industry Awards 2019. This award is given to a project that the judges consider to be particularly inspirational, selected from the individual category winners – making it the best of the best!
The Jack Copland Centre for SNBTS was awarded Social Infrastructure Project of the Year Award 2019, allowing it to go on to collect the top prize of the night.
Judges felt it worthy of the top prize because “The building is effectively a world leading example … and it is already attracting global attention”.
The new £33m headquarters for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service was completed on budget and resulted in a building which maximised interaction between departments, improved process manufacturing and increased flexibility - to allow a focus on research and development for future blood processing requirements.
The Jack Copland Centre is home to the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and delivers a first rate service in the processing, testing, supply, research and development of blood and human donor tissues and cells.

Social Infrastructure Project of the Year Award
Our Jack Copland Centre for SNBTS has been named Social Infrastructure Project of the Year at the prestigious British Construction Industry Awards 2019. This national award recognises a project which is improving society by providing better social infrastructure.
The new Jack Copland Centre houses the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service’s new headquarters. It incorporates laboratories, offices and logistics and distribution capabilities. Key to its success was the delivery of highly technical functional requirements while accommodating 400 staff.
Judges commented:
“This is an exceptional project from concept through design and to delivery.”

Scottish Design Awards Win
Reiach and Hall are delighted to announce that The Jack Copland Centre has been awarded the Health Building Award at this year’s Scottish Design Awards.
The Jack Copland Centre is the home to the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and delivers a first rate service in the processing, testing, supply, research and development of blood and human donor tissues and cells.

Fruitmarket Planning
We are happy to announce that The City of Edinburgh Council planners have approved proposals to extend the city centre Fruitmarket gallery into the adjoining building.
The listed former ‘Electric Circus’ nightclub, situated next to Waverley Station, is set to be transformed into a new gallery space to expand the Fruitmarket Gallery’s accommodation., creating a new kind of space for the gallery.
Fiona Bradley, Fruitmarket Gallery director, said:
"We are very excited about the project, which has opportunities for artists and audiences at its heart.
"It will deliver an inspirational new space for creative, collaborative working and renovate the Fruitmarket's existing spaces, ensuring that we can continue to operate at the forefront of contemporary culture for decades to come."
New Student Hub
Reiach and Hall are delighted to have been selected with rankinfraser landscape architecture and rtu. [Rob Thompson Urbanism] as one of five teams shortlisted by the RIBA to design a new Student Hub for the University of Leeds on their Western Campus.
The new Student Hub will be a focal point for the University’s Western Campus and will accommodate spaces for teaching and learning, collaborative and interdisciplinary working, educational outreach activities for diverse groups, student entrepreneurship and personal development and challenge.
Professor Julia Bennell, Deputy Dean of the Leeds University Business School commented:
“The response to the competition was outstanding with a large number of strong contenders, which we believe reflects the uniqueness of this opportunity to create an innovative and sustainable space for the University of Leeds students. Congratulations to those who are shortlisted.”
Reiach and Hall will present design concepts at a clarification interview in mid-October 2019.
Best Building in Scotland 2019
The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland [RIAS] has announced a shortlist of seven projects for its celebrated RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to be part of this list with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service – The Jack Copland Centre.
Judging will take place at the end of September against a range of criteria including architectural integrity, usability and context, delivery and execution, and sustainability. This year’s judges are Prof. Sadie Morgan [dRMM Chair], Henry McKeown [jm architects] and Prof. Mona Siddiqui OBE Hon FRIAS.
The winner will be announced live at a dinner at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh on 4th October by Aileen Campbell, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government and the Doolan family.

Shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Awards
The Lister Learning and Teaching Centre has been shortlisted in the Further and Higher Education category for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2019.
Designed by Reiach and Hall Architects for The University of Edinburgh, the aim was to create a new, modern and fully accessible learning and teaching facility in Edinburgh as part of an investment in the University’s existing estate.
Now complete, the Lister Learning and Teaching Centre provides capacity for 900 students and offers a mix of classrooms, tutorial/study space and a lecture theatre.
The annual AJ Retrofit Awards program is one of the most highly regarded in UK architecture and celebrates the design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs and improves the life of our built world. The 2019 winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in September.

Scottish Design Awards Shortlist
The Scottish Design Awards 2019 shortlist has been announced and we are delighted to have two of our projects feature on the nominations list.
Our refurbishment of the Lister Learning and Teaching Centre for The University of Edinburgh is shortlisted in the Regeneration Category and our Jack Copland Centre for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service is shortlisted in the Health Building or Project Category.
Award Winners are to be announced at the annual awards dinner on 22nd August 2019.

RIAS Award
Reiach and Hall are delighted to announce that The Jack Copland Centre for SNBTS (The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service) was presented with an award at this year’s Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards Dinner.
This RIAS award was one of ten presented, recognising the best buildings in Scotland for 2019. This is a credit to all those involved in the project – congratulations to the whole team.
Judges citation:
"...a highly resolved and elegantly controlled solution to a demanding technical brief."
They also described it as an "open, bright, engaging and uplifting place of work".

Part 3 Success

Selwyn Goldsmith Awards
We are delighted that our National Centre Inverclyde for sportscotland has received a Selwyn Goldsmith commendation award at the annual Civic Trust awards 2019.
Established in 2011, the Selwyn Goldsmith Awards for Universal Design are delivered in parallel with the Civic Trust Awards application process. With projects recognised for their exemplar attitude in ensuring that places work for all people, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or ability.
In order to be considered for the SGA’s it is necessary to demonstrate that a project has gone beyond the building regulations as a minimum, using best practice guidance, putting people at the heart of the project and showing exemplar design.
The sportscotland Inverclyde national sports training centre is the first fully accessible UK residential sports centre of its kind, and was designed for inclusivity in sport – catering for both elite athletes and for the local community.
Scottish Property Awards
The Jack Copland Centre for The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) has been recognised in the annual Scottish Property Awards – receiving the award for Health Care Development of the Year.
The Scottish Property Awards is an independent program which celebrates excellence in commercial property. This year they revealed 18 winners across 16 categories and we were delighted to receive the very first award in their new Healthcare category.
The Jack Copland Centre is the new home for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) headquarters, as well as the central blood, tissue and cell processing and testing facility for Scotland.
