AJ Architecture Awards Leisure Project of the Year
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to be awarded the Leisure Project of the Year Award by the Architects Journal at their annual awards for sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde.
‘Choosing a winner from such an eclectic mix of schemes, ranging from shopping centres and high-end hotels to tennis pavilions, would seem a tricky task. Yet the judges this year were unanimous. Reiach and Hall, the holder of last year’s AJAA Editor’s Choice award, has pulled off another highly polished scheme showcasing what can be achieved through a tightly knit bond with an intelligent and energetic client.'
The £12 million redevelopment of the residential sports training centre in Largs on the Firth of Clyde was praised for the way the architects’ ‘clear and inspiring’ concept and narrative had been delivered on such a low budget, in only two years and on a design and build contract. The jury was particularly impressed by how a ‘ribbon’ of new accommodation skilfully wrapped and connected the original facilities with the centre’s much-needed additions. They said: ‘The contour-hugging ribbon neatly links new and existing, joining double-height sports halls with the six-storey residential block. The monochrome polycarbonate cladding is subtly textured and, depending upon the weather, either reflects the natural surroundings or fades into them. This delightful and generous scheme serving both the local community and élite athletes is a worthy winner.’ [Richard Waite AJ _ News Editor]
Shortlisted for Scottish Property Awards
Reiach and Hall are pleased to be shortlisted for the 2019 Scottish Property Awards with 3 category nominations!
The Jack Copland Centre is shortlisted for Health Care Development of the Year and Architectural Excellence Award [Public] – this entry was completed by Reiach and Hall Architects and marks the completion of this state of the art national centre for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS).
A further entry, submitted by Hub South East and The City of Edinburgh Council, was shortlisted for Regeneration Project of the Year. This project “Leith Meanwhile” was completed by Reiach and Hall Architects and Studio Niro – seeking to breathe new life into the old tram depot on Leith Walk.
The Scottish Property Awards will take place on Thursday 28th February 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Glasgow Central.

Nucleus Nominated for the EU Mies Award 2019
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to announce that Nucleus, (The Nuclear and Caithness Archives) has been nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019.
The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award is granted every two years to acknowledge and rewards quality architectural production in Europe.
In this way, the Award draws attention to the major contribution by European professionals to the development of new ideas and technologies. At the same time, it offers both individuals and public institutions an opportunity to reach a clearer understanding of the cultural role of architecture in the construction of our cities.

Fruitmarket Gallery Refurbishment
The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh has appointed Reiach and Hall Architects to lead the refurbishment of its existing gallery building and the opening-up of the neighbouring warehouse building. The project will breathe new life into The Fruitmarket Gallery and bring the adjacent building into active cultural use.
The proposed redevelopment project will create a brand new space offering new opportunities for artist-led installations, performance and cross art form collaboration including live music, dance and theatre. It will also allow for new facilities for learning and participation and will renovate and revitalise the existing gallery spaces. The project will be completed in 2020.

Leith Walk Studios Open
Reiach and Hall with studio NIRO have completed work at Leith Walk Studios - part of the old tram depot on Leith Walk.
The new studio spaces have been brought back to life as a modern office space and a creative hub – the official opening of the studios at 165A Leith Walk marks the completion of a regeneration project made possible through capital grant funding from the Scottish Government and City of Edinburgh Council.
Cllr Kate Campbell, Housing and Economy Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, said:
“This project has been led by the local community. As a result we have an amazing hub which delivers space for the activities that local people want to see happening and want to be a part of. With space for the arts, education, community growing, physical activity, social enterprise and small business it has something for everyone and I’m sure will be a much loved addition to the local area. It’s a brilliant project …bringing this derelict space back into use and deliver for the local community.”
Two Civic Trust Regional Finalists
Reiach and Hall’s Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, Jack Copland Centre, and sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde have both been announced as Regional Finalists in the 2019 Civic Trust Awards.
147 projects have been selected from 240 national and international entries following the first stage assessment process. The Regional Finalists will now be reviewed by the Civic Trust Awards National Panel who will consider them for a National / International Award or Commendation.
We are especially delighted that sportscotland National Centre will also be considered for the Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design.

British Construction Industry Highly Commended
sportscotland National Sports Training Centre in Inverclyde by Reiach and Hall Architects has been Highly Commended at the 2018 British Construction Awards.
The new sports training facility in Largs is the UK’s first inclusive sports facility which caters for both elite athletes and the local community in a range of sports and activities. The project was highly commended in the ‘Cultural and Leisure Project of the Year' Category and was praised for its design with inclusivity at its heart.

RIAS Doolan Award 2018
We are absolutely delighted to have won the RIAS Doolan Award 2018. We are very grateful to the RIAS, the Scottish Government and the Doolan family for their continued support of architecture in Scotland.
Although we practice in difficult times with huge pressures on budgets and limited resources, we found ourselves on a shortlist of finely observed and made pieces of work. We are therefore immensely proud that the judges selected Nucleus. For us it is a building that attempts to explore a cultural as well as a physical landscape.

Scottish Design Awards 2018
Reiach and Hall had a great night at the Scottish Design Awards 2018, collecting a total of three awards.
The Proposed Building Award for The Million Seater Stadium, the Public Building of the Year Award for Nucleus [The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive] and the Chairman’s Award for Architecture, which was given to Nucleus [The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive].
We were also delighted for rankinfraser landscape architects who picked up the award for Public Realm/Landscaping in recognition of their contribution to the City for Glasgow College City Campus.

The ‘Real’ Stirling Prize
Reiach and Hall Architects would like to congratulate Historic Environment Scotland and the Engine Shed on their award for Best Building in 2018 – presented by the Stirling Society of Architects at their annual Awards ceremony.
Reiach and Hall Architects worked on the Engine Shed with HES and are delighted that this project has been recognised in its local chapter. The building also picked up an award for Best Use of Stone at the same awards.

Planning for Kilmartin
Reiach and Hall Architects have received full planning permission for The Kilmartin Museum Redevelopment on behalf of Kilmartin Museum Trust.
Plans for the £6.7million redevelopment project have been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and assist in the creation of an ambitious new Museum to hold Kilmartin’s growing collection.
The project will create more museum exhibition space to bring hidden treasures to light – including the three earliest ‘Beaker’ pots ever found in Britain. These and other internationally important artefacts, focus on the unique aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

Scottish Design Awards Shortlist
The Scottish Design Awards 2018 shortlist has been announced and we’re pleased to have four of our projects included in this year’s shortlist. Our Nucleus building is shortlisted in the Public Building category; the National Centre Inverclyde for sportscotland is shortlisted in the Leisure/Culture Building or Project category; our work with Historic Environment Scotland is shortlisted in the Regeneration, Education and Public Building categories; and our Million Seater Stadium is shortlisted in the Proposed Building category. Award winners are to be announced at the annual awards dinner on 23rd August 2018.
RIBA National Award
Reiach and Hall are delighted to have been awarded an RIBA National Award 2018 for Nucleus - The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive, Wick.
RIBA National Awards are the most rigorously judged awards for architectural excellence in the UK. A building that wins an RIBA National Award sets the standard for great architecture across the country.
A total of 49 National Awards were given out this year, with 3 of these awarded to Scottish Projects.
As a national awards winner the project will now be part of the longlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize, which will be announced in October.

RIAS Awards
Reiach and Hall were thrilled to collect two RIAS Awards at this year’s Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards ceremony.
The Engine Shed (completed with Historic Environment Scotland) and our Nucleus building (The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive, Wick) were amongst the 12 award winners representing the very best current Scottish architecture.
The Judges praised both buildings in their citations, noting:
The Engine Shed - "The judges were unanimous in their view that this was an outstanding project. The re-use of the existing elements of the building together with the very subtle and well executed extensions demonstrated considerable skill."
Nucleus - "The judges unanimously felt that this was an impressive industrial building which created an ethereal and beautifully sculpted building. Security issues in the design of the landscape did not detract from the panel's view that this was an excellent building."
Both The Engine Shed and Nucleus will now move forward to be considered for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
Kilmartin Museum Receives HLF
We are delighted to hear that our work with the Kilmartin Museum has received a £3.2m funding boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Having won the competition to be involved in the Kilmartin Redevelopment in 2013, we are pleased that the project has had support from HLF to help it move forward and realise a new era in the study of this important archaeological landscape.
Kilmartin Glen is remarkable for its rare alignment of culture, landscape and light. There is a unique quality to its orientation and layered complexity of landforms that collude to create a place apart, a sacred place. These qualities were recognised by ancient cultures whose enigmatic structures and rock drawings heighten the spiritual sense of this place. These ancient cultures left indelible marks.
The new museum is imagined as a vessel, a building that sensitively mediates between objects, people and the broader landscape. The building fulfils two basic needs: one is to simply support people while the other is to contain and display precious and fragile artefacts – safely, securely and beautifully.

Two pieces of work are on display – Kilmartin Museum Redevelopment (left) and the Science Teaching Hub with The University of Aberdeen (right). Both projects are illustrated with a visualisation and a model image.
The RSA Open Exhibition of Architecture is on show until Wednesday 6 June 2018.
Scottish Property Awards
The City of Glasgow College City Campus has been recognised in the annual Scottish Property Awards – receiving the award for Architectural Excellence [Public Building] and Development of the Year [Public Building].
The Scottish Property Awards is an independent program which celebrates excellence in commercial and public property in Scotland.
The City of Glasgow College Riverside Campus was completed in a joint venture between Reiach and Hall Architects and MLA.

RIBAJ Besties
Reiach and Hall were overwhelmed to be placed 2nd in the RIBA Journal’s ‘Best of the Best’ list of architectural practices. The feature from the April 2018 issue of the RIBA Journal the was titled ‘Besties’ and imagined that if industry prizes were a marker of success – then which architecture practices came out top?
The RIBA Journal’s feature writer Isabelle Preist described Reiach and Hall as creating ‘deep and thoughtful architecture’ which is ‘perhaps re-aligning a British architecture culture’. We live in an era of ever-proliferating architecture and design awards and each year brings a fresh crop – some specialist, some generalist. We are delighted to feature on the RIBAJ’s list as part of their celebration of successful practices from across the UK.
RIAS Awards Shortlist
Two Reiach and Hall projects have been shortlisted for this year’s RIAS Awards. Oriam [Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre] and Nucleus [The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive]. In addition, Reiach and Hall are also featured on the shortlist with Historic Environments Scotland for the Engine Shed. These three projects are among 25 buildings shortlisted in the Scottish regional awards 2018. Shortlisted projects will be visited over the next month and winning projects will be announced in June. All shortlisted projects are eligible to win RIAS Awards, Special Category Awards, RIBA National Awards and RIBA Special Awards.

Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted to be included in the 2018 RIAS Awards shortlist with three projects being considered for an award this year. The projects include: Oriam – Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre; Nucleus – The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Caithness Archive, Wick; and, with Historic Scotland, The Engine Shed, Stirling.
The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) have announced a 25 strong shortlist for its 2018 awards (from 75 entries). Each of these projects will now be visited by the judging panel which includes: RIAS President, Stewart Henderson, Joanna van Heyningen OBE RIBA, van Heyningen and Haward Architects (representing the Royal Institute of British Architects), Stuart McKill, Senior Executive and Managing Director, Saint-Gobain, Jon Stevenson, Director of Wood for Good and Rachel Tennant Hon FRIAS, Landscape Institute Scotland.
Stewart Henderson, President of the RIAS, commented:
“When shortlisting this year's entries for awards the panel were struck by the continuing high standard of submissions. The quality of architecture being produced the length and breadth of the country is hugely impressive. Practices, large and small, continue to demonstrate the strength and purpose of the profession in Scotland.”
R&H on BD AYA Shortlist
Reiach and Hall Architects have been shortlisted in the 2018 BD Architect of the Year Awards (AYA), in the Retail & Leisure category.
BD AYA celebrate the best in architecture and are unique in recognising a body of work across different sectors, judged by a panel of industry experts.
Our submitted portfolio includes Oriam (Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre), the Inverclyde National Centre, our options for New Meadowbank Sports Centre and our work with the Million Seater Stadium.
The winners will be announced on Wednesday 18th April at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel.
Top Accolade for Nucleus
Reiach and Hall Architects are delighted that Nucleus – the Nuclear and Caithness Archive – has secured the highest accolade from the government’s records regulator.
Following a comprehensive assessment of all operational aspects of the £20m facility near Wick, the “Place of Deposit” (PoD) status was granted by The National Archives at Kew (TNA) and National Records of Scotland in December 2017. This means that Nucleus has met all the UK’s stringent criteria for the safeguarding, preserving and cataloguing of important public information on behalf of the government.
The new archive facility is one of the largest repositories outside London to be accredited by the TNA. Martin Robb, Programme Manager for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) Information Governance Programme, which is responsible for records management, said:
“Our specialist contractor, Restore Ltd, has worked incredibly hard to secure Place of Deposit status and we’re extremely proud of their achievement.”

Jack Copland Centre Hailed as ‘World Class’
The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service welcomed inspectors from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), at the end of 2017, for a landmark inspection of their new facility, designed by Reiach and Hall Architects.
Originally known by R&H as ‘SNBTS’, the building is now named the Jack Copland Centre and is home to SNBTS’s headquarters and will be the largest blood processing, testing and research facility in Scotland. Once the building was completed, the Service was not permitted to process or store blood or blood components on site for patient use until authorised to do so by MHRA.
Inspecting the site for the first time, inspectors from MHRA measured the Centre’s operational compliance with relevant regulations, good manufacturing practices and licences previously granted. Most significantly, inspectors formally approved the Jack Copland Centre’s Blood Establishment Authorisation (BEA) and Wholesale Dealing Authorisation (WDA) which means that blood and blood components can now be processed and manufactured on site and plasma products can be stored and distributed.
During the inspection the MHRA team were extremely positive. The lead inspector told SNBTS staff that he had assessed several pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities around the world and that the Jack Copland Centre is one of the best he’d seen. Other inspectors commented on the enormity and complexity of the project undertaken and commended the blood transfusion service on the design of the ‘fantastic facility’.

Falkirk Starts on Site
Work has officially begun on Forth Valley College’s new Falkirk Campus, as Scotland’s Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Shirley-Ann Somerville, cut the first section of turf at the Middlefield site on Friday 10 November 2017 – joined by FVC Principal Dr Ken Thomson, Board Members, students, the design and the construction teams.
The new Falkirk College Campus will focus on training facilities for science and technology, engineering and healthcare – it is designed to provide innovative learning spaces throughout and will incorporate the latest teaching technology. The Campus will also include the College’s Centre of Excellence for Sport.
The new campus is set for completion in late 2019 and will complete the FVC’s ambitious estates programme which saw their £21 million Alloa Campus opened in 2011 and their £29 million Stirling Campus opened a year later – both designed by Reiach and Hall Architects.
