Renovation of iconic Peter Womersley spectator stand, originally built in 1964.

We are currently helping Gala Fairydean Rovers Football Club and Borders Council with a project to repair and restore the iconic concrete spectators stand at Netherdale in Galashiels. The stand was designed by the renowned architect Peter Womersley with construction being completed in 1965. The stand was listed Category A by Historic Scotland in 2006.

There have been additions and alterations carried out to the stand over the decades, many of which have been poorly designed and executed. Additionally the structure is built of reinforced concrete which is in a poor state of repair, resulting in the stand being closed to the public for fear of falling spalled concrete. We are working with David Narro Associates Engineers and Morham and Brotchie Quantity Surveyors to design a programme of repairs and refurbishment that includes fully repairing the concrete, providing ventilation and insulation to the ceiling voids, repairing and improving the drainage systems and placing a new liquid membrane covering on the roof, as well as minor decoration and removal of unsightly paintwork and adverts.

We are also helping with fundraising activities and raising awareness of the plight of building. In 2014, we displayed and lectured about the building at the Venice Biennale. In 2016 we gave a lecture about the importance of Peter Womersley’s work in London. We are in discussions with local art galleries and institutions about raising further funds to enable a comprehensive refurbishment of the rest of the project in the future. We are hosting a virtual ‘Doors Open Day’ Event in September 2021.
