Portobello Swim Centre
Portobello
In August 2019 Reiach and Hall was appointed to design the full refurbishment and upgrading of the category A listed Portobello Swim Centre for Edinburgh Leisure.
The Turkish Baths will be fully restored to their original 1906 state and numerous poor interventions and alterations that were carried out over the last 115 years will be removed, allowing the building to be appreciated in the way the original client and designers intended.
A full repair and refurbishment of the external envelope of the building will also be undertaken as part of the project
The project is currently at the beginning of RIBA stage 4
The Portobello Swim Centre holds two pools and the last of Edinburgh’s Victorian-built Turkish baths, of which the capital has housed several in years gone by. The seaside structure was originally designed by Robert Morham, the City Architect for Edinburgh during the 1890s, responsible for contributing to dozens of widely-recognised works around Edinburgh such as the North Bridge, Lauriston Place Fire Station and the transformation of Princes Street Gardens.
The project involves making substantial repairs to the two pools, extensive re-tiling of the pools, stripping out and replacing the changing rooms as well as re-invigorating the arrival and entrance areas. The fitness suites and strength and conditioning areas will be relocated. Energy-saving technology will be installed to improve performance and make the baths more environmental-friendly.
